Check out Shakti(Mcloughlin's "Indian" band)OR recently his homage to Shakti(musicians)-"Remember Shakti",there is a live CD that is terrific. I must find out the name given to that rhythmic singing. I studied Classical Indian music at Music College(Leeds) so to my shame I can't tell you what it's called but as you recognised it's kind of a call to the Tabla, they sing it,then play it. For the record,Hindustani(Northern Indian music*) is bloody difficult to get your head round, the counting and form is a nightmare when you're "westernised"-good modules on the course though, loved it. *South Indian music is known as Carnatic Music, there are fundamental differences in instrumentation, form, scales etc. I saw Mcloughlin 18 months ago in Warwickshire with Zakir Hussain(Tabla Master)and other Indian musicians-wicked stuff, that was the "Remember Shakti" band. ATB-DG.
