I know I'm all late to the discussion, but here are some tidbits of info that I am aware of... The "Banghra" movement, largely centered in the UK combines Punjabi style Indian music (heavy on rhythm) with reggae/dancehall and hip hop. Films like "Bhaji on the Beach," "East is East" etc. have showcased this style of music. A lot of the banghra stuff has found its way into Bollywood movies (Indian film industry). The drum and bass movement also overlaps with a lot of Punjabi rhythms... and there are a few interesting artists out like Tabla Beat Science and Karsha Kale. Talvin Singh has already been mentioned in another post. The particular music you heard at the club called "Chutney" is particular to Trinidad and the Caribbean, which combines Indian music with calypso and reggae rhythm styles. Most folk dont know but nearly half of Trinidad's folk are of East Indian descent (actually 40%, with 40% being Afro-Trini and the remaining 20% being mixed). So there's a lot cross cultural exchange in the music. Most of the banghra stuff can be found in the int'l section of major record stores, but the chutney music will probably be cataloged with soca and calypso and will more than likely be found in stores that service the West Indian/Caribbean community.
