The lack of decoration and puntature in her interpretation did not seem to come from the conductor, who allows these things, but from her shying away from them. At times she sounded stretched and the fireworks were not there. I had recently heard a young Spanish soprano, Mariola Cantarero, in the same role in Cremona and she was absolutely stunning. So stunning, in fact, that I have been travelling to hear as often as I can. Such a great performance still fresh in my ears did not help when it came to Kelessidi, who I felt only sang 85% of the role. Florez, on the other hand, was great, as always, and another singer I travel for. As for the production, well, it was ridiculous. What posesses directors to thrust these things upon us I will never know. What is even worse is that he played it for laughs during one of Elvino's beautiful phrases demonstrating a total lack of sensitivity for the music. This, however, is not uncommon amongst the current crop of directors.
