f.y.i. The winners in the BBC Awards for World Music were announced last Saturday. You can hear the edition of BBC Radio 3's World Routes that broadcast the announcement on the Radio 3 web site for the next week, and see profiles of all the nominees at http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio3/world/awards2003/nominees.shtml The winners, selected by a jury from the nominees announced at Womex (or in the case of the Critics' Award, voted on by a huge international panel) were: Africa: Orchestra Baobab (Senegal) Americas: Los de Abajo (Mexico) Asia/Pacific: Mahwash & Ensemble Kaboul (Afghanistan) Europe: Mariza (Portugal) Focus 2003: Middle East: Samira Said (Egypt/ Morocco) Boundary Crossing: Ellika & Solo (Sweden/ Senegal) Newcomer: Gotan Project (France) Critics' Award for Album of 2002: Orchestra Baobab "Specialist In All Styles" (World Circuit) All the above should be appearing at the pollwinners concert at Ocean in London on March 24th, to be webcast, nationally broadcast on Radio 3 on March 27th and televised on BBC4 on March 28th.
